Things to Think, by Robert Bly

Think in ways you've never thought before
If the phone rings, think of it as carrying a message
Larger than anything you've ever heard,
Vaster than a hundred lines of Yeats.

Think that someone may bring a bear to your door,
Maybe wounded and deranged: or think that a moose
Has risen out of the lake, and he's carrying on his antlers
A child of your own whom you've never seen.

When someone knocks on the door, think that he's about
To give you something large: tell you you're forgiven,
Or that it's not necessary to work all the time, or that it's
Been decided that if you lie down no one will die.

Questions for reflection:
What are some habitual thoughts that roll around your mind without your control?
What would you rather be thinking?  Practice those thoughts.
What is the most outrageous idea you could make up?
Ponder a metaphorical child you've never seen, perhaps something/someone small that needs your attention or nurturing?  What part of your inner child needs attention and nurturing?
**If someone knocks on your door, or rings your phone, what really LARGE message would heal a wound in your emotional soul?  What do you need to hear?

  1. I love that your are being true to your truest concept of yourself. These are difficult and probing possibilities you offer here. They have given me much thought as I hover here over the laptop on my kitchen counter after having awakened at 1 a.m. I've puttered and cleaned up the mouse turds under the sink and now that the day is actually starting, I'm a little confused and tired. I'll try to hook in to my deeper self a little later. Love you.
